Just remember "pea" when you get back to take your rehab very seriously! That old saying of "no pain, no gain", I'm afraid that there is a great deal of truth to that. No matter, good luck and check in as soon as you feel up to it. We're all routing (grin) for you............

Hey Peabob, I know you don't know me yet as I'm new, but I've started following your thread, I gotta say I'm really proud of you and your efforts to lose the weight! I wish I could get my friend more interested in doing the same thing, he's somewhere close to 400 pounds!!! He was always pretty big, but he seems to really have been packing it on lately. I think I'm starting to get under his skin finally though, he's actually looking at Bowflexes. I wish he'd just get a trike, then we could ride sometime. Sounds like Tourezrick is a pretty good motivator, along with everyone else in here! I just bought an ActionBent trike last Friday, but the guy that put it together said it was his first trike he ever built, so I'm just now getting the bugs worked out! Man is she fast!!! I'm gonna love riding her, especially since I don't have to try and crane my neck up on one of those uncomfortable diamond frames!!!!
Anyway, hang in there, I hope your surgeries go well and you get to be in the wind once more very soon!!!!

Kurt, gee thanks for the encouragement and i also hope my surgeries go well. Its been well over a month since i have not been able to ride my new trike and that is just not right. My left knee is first for the surgery on the 21st of june. after about 8 to 10 days the dr said i may be able to start riding again. short jaunts and low gear just mainly range of motion, heck i cannot wait. this really sucks. And as far a s tourezrick goes with his last post i shoulda figured he would be out loooking at all dem ladies in lycra lol... now thats funny. anyways you all take care and i will keep ya posted and by the way i lost 3 more pounds this week. how i did it i dont know. had a birthday party and graduation open house. whew... life is good. take care Peabob

Hi everyone....... Have been trying to follow the thread for the last 3 weeks as best I can. Congrats Toure' as I know the feeling when you reach those goals you set for yourself or able to pass a difficult milestone. The first goal for me was too get below the 300 mark and can remember how good it felt when that happened. Pea', I hope you are doing fine as well with your knees. So far, I have not had to deal with my knees or my hips and is one of the big reasons that I knew that I had to get my weight down soon and why the trike was such a great tool just for that.
I have really missed my trike and my mutts as this is the last week of the four weeks that I will have spent in the UK this time. If any of you get the chance, especially if the USD ever gets its "act" together, you must come over. It is like arriving into a "living" postcard. Thank goodness for digital photography!
I just got back from Cornwall. That is the both west and farthest south in England. Let's just put it this way, with the clotted cream, fresh strawberry jam, and scones they are famous for down there, this fat boy is going to have to peddal a few more miles when I get back.
Just before leaving for Cornwall last week we had just spent a "wee" bit over a week in bonnie Scotland up above Glasgow in Glencoe. You would not believe the scenery, the lochs, or especially the fresh seafood, plus all the bikers and hikers. When we left to come back home here in Hastings, East Sussex, we were delayed by all the bikers on a time trial going up to where we had been. I tell you what, not only does it take some good training to manage the inclines and very steep grades, but "huevos" of Sheffield steel to manage the narrow roads that you share with not only cars but large trucks (lorries) as well. Thank goodness I never witnessed or heard of a biker that had "bought-it". I mentioned to the couple that I was with how much fun my trike would be up there but afraid I just wouldn't want to deal with the obstacle course.
Glad everyone seems to be either on the mend or doing well. I know that I will have a bit more to do when get home, but just about every day we have had fairly extensive walks just about all day, and with a few exceptions, I have been managing my calories reasonably well.
Catch y'all later "mates"..........LOL

Hi Guys!
Here's one somebody might want to respond to.
My brother was overweight for years, till he came up with this method. He started eating only once a day. He says he can eat as much as he wants, and anything he wants, as long as he only eats one meal a day!
I'm not advocating this approach, nor do I claim to know the wisdom of this approach, but it sure seems to work, & he seems no less for wear. He looks healthy (better than he has in years in fact), & says he feels better.
All I know is that it works for him & he seems to be able to stick to it over the long haul! (a couple of years, so far)

Sir Joey, many who follow this forum and have for the past 2 or so months probably chuckled when they read your posting knowing how that would most likely rattle my "cage". I can certainly apprecieate any information about anything that seems to work. That is the entire basis of forums like this. However, having said that, it was just like when JoeBanks discussed his method of weight loss. He literally "starved" himself/his body into loosing weight. I personally feel and medically/physiologically know that either of these methods, IN GENERAL, would be counter productive in most individuals.
Once a day splurging with little to absolutely nothing in between plays crazy things with blood sugar levels. Humans have built in mechanisms to deal with starvation and the most common way of dealing with starvation is energy storage. Humans most commonly store energy/calories in our fat stores and a smaller amount as glycogen for fast energy bursts. If you have ever seen or known anyone with HYPOGLYCEMIA they many times appear overweight. That is due to their blood glucose management systems no working properly. Most of the time a minor dietary change will "fix" this. That change is to eat small meals about every three or so hours, and NO I don't mean candy bars and soft drinks......LOL. This is basically what Jorge Cruise ascribes to in his "3 Hour Diet" program. I know, I bought and read his book, and used his method and it works. I have looked at many of the trendy diet books and most, if not all of them, make very little sound, safe, biological sense.
I am over weight, I love to cook and of course eat. I live to eat as most "fatties" like me do. I still think all of the diets and yes, even Cruise's diet, have most like us focus too much on food and eating. This may be where your brother found his own personal salvation in limiting his focus onto food(s) to just once a day. You said he has lost weight and as long as he has lost fat and not muscle that is great!
I personally find that trying to eat smaller more frequent meals works, or a nutritionally sound breakfast, larger meal in the afternoon, and a light meal in the evening. The bottom line for me is that until I incorporated routine exercise in a setting that I actually enjoyed, and of course stuck with, I could not have started to loose weight. You build up muscle and you burn fat. As you build up muscle you are increasing the very mechanisms that allow you to burn fat and burn it off at a greater and greater rate. As you also develope that so called "switch" to "turn on" fat burning, as all atheletes do, you are now increasing your blood sugar levels with all that energy that you had unnecessarily stored up as fat. When your blood sugar levels are higher your brain's mechanism that tells you are or must be hungry get shut down..........HOORAY...... No pill or unbalanced dietary scheme will work that well! Plus, with all those endophins "running around" you've got to feel better about yourself and most things around you........... A safe, self induced, euphoria that is totally legal and damn good for you as well.
Sorry, about the lengthy post, but as you can see this has become another obcession with me besides cooking and eating. The way Iook at it now is that as I loose weight and get healthier, I can afford to eat some of those things I so love to cook.

Well, Paul ought to start posting again sometime soon. Hope all went well with the surgery and heal-up. Going out for a 40+ miler on the I-M Canal tomorrow, from Channahon, Il. to Morris, Il for lunch and then back. Took a buddy out for a look at trikes yesterday, he liked the Cat Expedition and is waiting for a 700 to arrive for a test ride. Guy is 70+ and a fast rider. Me, I'm still a youthful 59, so I won't really be old till next June 27th.

Hey Paul -
It's my turn to ask where you've been! Hope surgery went well and you are back riding soon! Keep on the Quacks about Byetta - it can change your life, that and trike riding, too! Just got my quarterly test results back, and I gotta crow! My result, followed by ideal in parenthesis - A1c 6.0 (6.0), Triglycerides 70 (150), Cholesterol 136 (under 200), HDL 32 (40 or better, but I used to be 29), LDL 90 (100), PSA 0.774 (under 2.5). Oh, and I've lost 40 lbs. since February!
Good Quacks, good meds and lots of trike riding make the difference. Now, where is the 'Wayback Machine' so I can get younger?

Tourezrick, that's darned impressive, how's it coming now that another 6 weeks has passed?
I'm at 215 right now and need to get back down to 175, which I've done once before on semi-Atkins and exercise. (Type 1 diabetic, hard to go protein-only with frequent hypoglycemia when exercising a lot and not eating much, but I try.)
Waiting for the Scorpion fx to get put together, and in the meantime walked 9-10 miles with the wife and dog yesterday. :-)

Hey all Im backkkkk.. this here is peabob, yes the surgeries went ok. Not as well as i hoped for seems the dr. told me my knees are shot to hell in a handbasked and that i am looking at total knee replacements as soon as next year.. DAMIT.. The weight loss has ceased due to having to keep the weight off my knees for a couple of weeks. The good news is i can start riding my trike again short distances, no rick not to the end of the driveway and back hahahahah. i have to take it easy and start all over again but the good news is i got the wind in my face again and i have gone back to work today the 10th. sorry i have not posted but have been rather busy with other things and stairs are a bummer since my puter is downstairs in the mancave hahahaha. but i will keep on posting and you all keep up the good work. Thanks so much for all the good wishes and prayers... i appreciate your friendship all and one. thanks Peabob.

I know how you feel Pea.......... Was away for most of this June and then due to some serious family issues, not to mention the horrible humidity this summer from all the rain we had had combined with some days well over 100F, triking was just not in the cards for me. I got mine out almost 4 weeks ago. Tell you what, I was glad to find that I still had some of my endurance remaining, but it has really taken some concerted efforts to get back in the swing of things. I found that setting smaller more frequent goals for myself really has paid off. The weather is much cooler now with much lower humidity, even in the morning.
What had really started to bother me are my legs and especially my ankles. Due to my spinal condition and nerve damage my legs have really played havoc with me if I sit for very long. I did swim some during the hotter months but it seems that nothing measures up for me like triking.
I know how you must feel getting back into more of a routine many of us had to give up this summer. I am so proud of my legs, ankles, and feet. Not only has the swelling receded, but I don't even have pitting edema in my shins. To top all of this off I even have managed to loose an additional 3 pounds.
I think that what all of this is telling many of us, and for sure me, that we are going to have to afford ourselves some sort of exercise or proper activities if we are going to maintain a reasonable quality of living. I have a dear friend in the Dallas area that is well over 300 lbs. and now has had both of this hips replaced. The nature of his job forces him to sit for long periods. I have tried and his wife has tried to convince him that some sort of exercise or activity is got to happen if he is going to loose much weight and keep it off. I thought I was hard headed!......LoL. I have tried to tell him how much better he will feel and how it actually moderates your appetite. I think that if he, or anyone else for that matter, finally experiences that euphoric "high" that you really do get from proper physical activity we could really see a renaissance physical fitness. I also believe that if many could get past some of the "sticker shock" there is when looking to purchase a trike many more could enjoy the pleasure and satisfaction of "non-boring" physical activity/exercise.
Regards...............

Keep the faith pea! You can do this.
Not to be preachy (he says before preaching), but even in the absence of exercise for the moment, are you dieting as well?
Also, have you considered upper-body type exercise, either in the gym or perhaps with a hand-trike or hand-bike?

I realize that for many here, my most recent mileage goal perhaps won't seem like much, but I managed 20.7 miles this Saturday. The weather was great and the ride was beautiful.
I must admit though that I was a bit "put to shame" by the hord of two wheelers that were out on the same road I was on. Wow.......... These guys musta been moving at least 20 mph or more. I am encouraged though that I have been progressively increasing my speed very comfortably.
As far as weight loss goes, I am stuck at this current weight which fluctuates of course. I do realize that you should really weigh only about once a week. I read just this morning some reflections on serious weight loss that mirrored this frequency of "weighing-in". Basically what it brought out was that if you are feeling better and you clothes are fitting better your on the right track. It also compared proper weight loss as a "marathon" and not a "sprint".
I hope this finds everyone doing well and meeting or exceeding their goals.
Regards............
P.S. The "Conquest the Coast" fun ride this weekend in Corpus Christi, Tx. got washed out. This was actually a relief as my truck came up Friday morning with some serious engine issues that forced me to cancel. I regret the outcome for those that made it to the ride, but it was nice that I could have made the 400 mile round trip for "nada".

If memory serves, my doc even suggested Byetta as a possibility in combination with insulin (I'm type 1).
I've been back on the wagon (in this case, trike) for 3 weeks now, and down a few lbs already, only riding a few miles a day (probably 4-11 a day, 6 days a week, so far), with only mild dieting, but my insulin levels have fallen off by over 30% from previous due to the exercise.
Keep the faith, as in the weight loss game, slow and steady truly does win the race.

Congrats! Maybe just eating better is working for you. Don't get thrown off if it comes back some days, cycling up and down by a few lbs. is normal just on water weight.
On my own plan, riding for 4 weeks now, I'm down about 5-6 lbs. Not being too aggressive about it, I don't want to lose muscle mass, but definitely seeing some movement.

Hey Pea........try not to get so despondent mate. We're all here for you! I try to watch how many times I post. I know that I can get verbose and "over the top" when I get this obsessed and passionate about something. Much like you Pea, I truly thank G-d for learning about trikes and finding this forum because I will always believe that the odds on my future health and well being would have been severely compromised with out it. I am loosing weight slowly but surely...LOL...mostly slowly, but that is just how most of us gained it in the first place. I have enough scientific background and have done enough reading and research, much of it here on the web, that finally convinced me that weight loss without some sort of physical activity is very difficult, if not extremely frustrating.
The other issue here Pea is that you are diabetic and I am not, so when I see that there is a thread going on here along that vain, I hate to break it up with some other topic. This is a great topic you started. Just look how many hits it gets and how many comments have been left! Perhaps there should be some sort of sub-thread (if that is a word...LOL) regarding the diabetic aspect of weight loss?
Anyway, we are all here for you and all for each other as a group. That is one of the most miraculous parts about the Internet. I just did my Grangerland to Splendora run for the second time, 21 miles yesterday and it really felt great and much easier than the first time. I know for others that might not seem far, but for this fat old washed-up retired Texas dentist, that was a helluva goal for me. I love it. I have my "10 miler", as I refer to it and then there are other routes that I have tried and future goals planned as I get healthier and gain more stamina. What I love about triking is that I never have felt like I over did it or actually might have hurt myself.
Keep the faith Pea...... We're all here for ya dude! This is like the Multiple Musketeers......LOL
Kindest regards....

Quit the thread? No, not likely, but have been busy. Don't know if I mentioned it, but over the summer, one of our recumbent riders had a terrible crash on an organized tour in Wisconsin. He was on his high end df (an Orbea - and his brother makes the 'Rolf' wheel). Well anyway, the rider in front of him went down and Dieter dumped trying to avoid the fallen rider. In doing so, he sustained a broken clavicle, four broken ribs and a fractured skull. He was in a coma for five or six weeks, in a hospital in Wisconsin, transferred by air ambulance to Northwestern Memorial in Chicago, where he woke up, thence to the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago, and now, home. He is looking into trikes (little wonder), and an ankle replacement (not injured in the crash). Modern medicine is great stuff - ankle replacements, I'm waiting for a brain replacement.
Anyhow - I'm down under 240 - loss has been slow, but steady, but now can maintain 14 - 16 mph on the Scorp! Thank G-d for Byetta!
Paul - you hang in there, buddy! It will all come, in time. When you get your new knee, just remember to use your gears, men tend to want to grind it out in a high gear, and that won't work for you.
Okinell - 21 miles is great! Next summer, you will be doing 30 +! Without a map in front of me, are you anywhere near Wacko - er... Waco? Did you vote for Kinky in the Primary? And if not, could he have been any worse than "Arnold" or "Jesse the Body"?
JimAtLaw - Byetta is only for folks who have a living pancreas (ie. making some insulin) - but there is a similar drug for type 1 folks - ask your endo. Any time you can drop 5 - 6 lbs, you are doing the right thing.
