Jim is right, Bob: 35 pounds in four months is a huge loss, and probably more healthy than 135 in the same period of time. Now the riding season is fairly begun and your trend is begging to be continued.
You are entirely correct in your winning formula: less eating and more exercising works every time. Too bad it takes a little while to get those pheromones cranked up so it brings its own high with it, but that will eventually happen.
In the meantime you've got the trike and you've got the open road. Check out some of the recent strings with my name on them: I'm sending pictures, and some of them might give you some laughs, or inspiration -- or both.

Good to hear from you again, Peabob, I've been wondering how you've been doing.
The numbers sound good, and what's more, you've kept the trend moving in the right direction. Averages of 13 mph on 15- to 40-mile rides are respectable figures; here's a tip of the helmet to you.
More importantly, I hope you've been having fun. Improving one's health is the best incentive I know of to keep riding, but having fun is a close second.
Good riding,
Larry

hey all peabob here. I am back from vacation and from all the fine out door cooking and a occasional brew. (two all week) i am here to report. As of this morning i am offically down below 300 pounds. i tipped the scale at a petite 296 pounds. A whopping 74 pounds since i started the forum and riding my trikes. I want to thank everyone for the nice words of encouragement and especially Larry K, you have pushed me far more than you might realize and i appreciate that. This past week i was riding a average of 50 miles a day. Just out cruising when i did go out riding and i also put a deck on the back of our Trailer. That was fun. Well keep on posting and i will be back next monday for sure. thanks again everyone. take care Peabob.

Great!! to hear from you, Peabob, and especially with this report. I have been thinking about you since your last note, knowing that when you wrote this time you'd be into the 200s. Here's a big pat on the back for following your program like a champ.
You're right: I didn't know how important my words were for you, but I'm very glad they help. I'm still with you, too, and looking for more. I hope you might find the time to write about your triking experiences as well as your increasingly healthy lifestyle.
All the best,
Larry

Well done peabob, that's serious weight loss. Took me a bit to figure it out, I think metric for weight. 33+kg loss over the year or so is darn impressive.
Take care and be well,

Congrats !! Peabob I am new here.. I have been reading this thread with interest and you got my attention.. very impressive. I don't know your height but for insurance life/health policies a 6 ft person can be standard class and weight up to 240 lb with most insurance companies.. Of course I am not considering diabetes or other health issues just height / weight but that let's you see where you stand vs the average population. Again congrats to you and other trikers here who are doing such a good job with their weight situations.

Congrats Bob! 50 miles a day - that's huge! And that much weight loss ain't bad either! I rode my first 50 miler yesterday and have been stalled on the weight loss for a few months - you've inspired me though, time to pick it back up.

Hi again. thanks for the congrats and now i got to say the 50 mile rides are not at a full blazeing competitive ride. it takes me 5 or 6 hours minimum with several rest stops along the way to smell the flowers etc. I am not a human powered speed racer here and that is not my intentions. i just enjoy riding off the beaten highway and enjoy being outside. It is helping with the weight loss along with the food plan. Eat less move more.. ya gotta love the results. As far as the cobra was asking I am 6' 2" tall and at the onset of my forum here i was at 370 pounds diabetic, hypertension but my good cholesterol was to low. And i am 52 years old. So i have my fair share of health issues. but im working on it. thanks again your pal peabob.

I am so delighted to see Pea's and others enthusiasm. This site has been a powerful tool for so many of us with our own health and fitness agendas. I envy you Pea for your wonderful progress. I am still struggling at some sort of plateau. Last year when this thread was originally started I had been swimming and trying to get into some weight training. I then left for about a month's holiday and when got back tried to pick things back up. The problem then and now is our confounded summer weather here in Southeast Texas! I gave up on swimming mainly because the pools are kept under huge tents of sorts and they just can't afford to heat the water up much. I shutter to think what the temps would be in the winter, even as mild as they are around here. The weight training didn't last too long either as there was just one young woman with too many personal issues to rely on. So, I did what I do love the most and that is my trike.
I really envy your 50 milers as I have that sort of time available to me, but they'd find my sun burnt carcass off the side some where given our daily temps and humidity. I have had to limit, for now, most of my rides to late afternoons and evenings. Sometimes the best I can do is 5 miles and then occasionally I'll get in 10. Something is better that nothing, but then there's the days like the last few where we have severe afternoon/evening thunderstorms.
I'm sorry, I know I'm sitting here whining like some kid. I really am concerned as I have posted before that dieting, aka, limiting your caloric intake without proper exercise is eventually just going to buy you more harm than good. You'll loose fat AND muscle setting you up to more than likely gaining weight that will be just that much harder to loose.
As much as I hate it, I guess the only real alternative is stationary cycling to supplement off times due to uncooperative weather.
Sorry for the rant folks....... I guess I feel better now...........LOL
Regards.....

Worked for me.. Although admittedly I didn't have the larger weight challenge that some are working to overcome. I have always preached (to anyone who would listen LOL) that Regular riding/training will always get better results then infrequent riding & longer rides.. When I had a program of just 20-30 min per day 3 days on and 1 day off then repeat I got my best results. Also the 3 days were Easy Gears..Heavy Gears..Easy Gears.. An easy gear to start and end each session... You and your Doc decide on what is Easy and Heavy for you personally. Also I always ride at age 58 with a Heart Monitor Watch.. I think we all have 20 min if not make it 15 min. I am convinced It is the repetitive regularity of the exercise that is the key. Together with a proper diet of course. Peabob is great example. We put it on slowly so we have to take it off ...well, slowly. My hat/helmet is off to anyone who dedicates themselves to the work and self deprivation involved in large weight loss. Just my 2 cents.

Thanks for the gentle "nudge"........ I guess I got myself into a bit of a "funk" lately with this weather. You're totally right on the exercise. It's not so much the duration of the exercise, but the routine and frequency. That is, even 15 minutes is better than nothing.
Thanks.........I needed the help and encouragement. That is what's so great about this forum and this thread that Pea started. LOL.....some of us need "sponsors" like most "12 step" programs.
Kindest regards........

Wow, you guys make me feel like a slug. And I appreciate every word I read!!
Like many people who come to recumbent riding I have my physical challenges. Really no better or worse than others, but challenging just the same. The thing I appreciate the most here is the consistent, freely given encouragement I read in this post and all across this forum. I think the general direction I see in this discussion is that consistency in whatever your program may be is key. I completely agree. I know from personal experience that its very hard to get going once you stop moving. So at the risk of sounding cliche': "Never give up, Never surrender" and for your life's sake...keep moving! And Peabob...your are an inspiration! Congratulations

Hey friends and neighbors. I know its tuesday so i will get to the point. no weight loss last week. im still at 296. However as of monday my riding is taking a serious break. I was at work on monday when my two left feet and bifocals got tied up and i ended up falling. Now when you take a 300 pounder and throw him on the concrete i think the concrete wins. seems i may have broken my right elbow. i cant get to see the ortho surgeon till thursday. until then i cant seem to grip twist or pull with my right hand. so my riding is done for now. i still will walk and eat right. i think the reason i did not lose any pounds last week was two partys and a few beers. it was my nephews birthday. i had no will power but dam was the two beers i drank very good. well least i did not gain any weight and im back with the program. so keep on posting and keep the faith. Your broken yellbow friend Peabob. p.s. i say Yellbow cause when i move it just right i YELL...... LOL

Hiya Pea..........I am so sorry to hear about your fall. I know the feeling as I fell a few years ago off the steps to my deck with a 10 week old Dachshund puppy in my hands. I managed to protect the puppy but really did a number on my ribs and my left arm and elbow. I pray that you don't suffer too much and you can get ta tadpole'in soon....LOL. I noted some time back in responding to one of your "darker" posts, how popular this thread had become after you had started it, when you and any of us had just found the forum. I'd have to look back to recall the number of hits this thread had then, but I can tell you for one, that your persistence and the collective comments have been a great boon to my journey to weight loss and better health.
Just the other day I had posted pretty much of a "whine and rant".......LOL, about getting fed up with this crappy weather we've been having and limiting my triking. I wasn't long that some one mentioned a trainer, but more importantly that it wasn't the length of the time you spent exercising, but rather the frequency, irrespective of the actual time spent. I know this must sound really stupid of me, but I can't tell you how that really inspired me and I am back out there daily once again on or off the road. Even if things really go sour I just lock the front brakes and set-up the trainer. As much as I dislike that thing I can do 15-30 minutes of just about anything.
You and this thread have been incalculably powerful in supporting and sustaining my commitment. Thank you and all the contributors.
P.S. Pea.......wasn't it you that said, "Eat less and Move more."? I must tell you that is a great "mantra" for many of us. Me especially!.............

Okinell, The great thing about this forum is all the support we give and get. It is truly a joint venture. I did say eat less and move more but i must admit i copied it from somewhere. its not a original statement but how true it is. I hope you continue to keep moving and continue toward your health goal. I will be here for support and i am sure you will be to. I think we have a great bunch of cycle enthusiast with many varied health problems. Together we can help each other and move forward. thanks for all your posts. your pal Peabob

Congratulations Bob! Sorry to hear about the fracture, but glad to hear you're keeping up the exercise, activity, and weight loss trend, and about the soon-to-be new addition to your family!
And you know, if you still feel the need for speed, you could always swap the multiple front sprockets for a speed drive setup and get rid of the shifter on the right hand side altogether...

I've been following this topic since reading about your fracture, Peabob. It's such a common injury, but that doesn't make it any more tolerable for those who receive it. It sounds like you won't need surgery, though, so that's a good thing.
And it is a very good thing that, despite the injury, you still lost three pounds! I could be wrong, but I'll take a guess that this involved a little will power and self-counselling. I know any time I'm immobilised for a while at home, I tend to think of the refrigerator and it's the very devil to get my mind onto something else.
Chin up now, you're doing great. I suggest while you're healing up that you go and speak some tender words to the trike now and then to make sure she doesn't think you've forgotten about her. You know how temperamental they get when they think you don't care.
May the time pass fast for you until you're back on the road again.
Larry

Hey Larry K. thanks for the kind words. I am doing more walking especially at work. they have me on a restriction and wont put me out on comp. I think another factor is the pain meds im on.. they curb my hunger.. or the fact i have to eat left handed. now this may sound flaky but i am eating slower eating left handed and maybe i get the full feeling faster thus not eating as much. Its hard as hell to hit the pie hole left handed lol but hey it must be working. I go back to the ortho man so ill prolly post more tommorrow. take care and thanks your pal Peabob

hello friends and neighbors. well the arm is almost shattered according to the doc. a few more foot pounds pressure when i did the full gainer and i would of messed it up real good. 6 to 8 weeks is what the doc says ill be unable to use the right wing. However im walking a lot since i cant do nothing more at work. yeah still working. loss time accident they dont want to report so i come in and walk. averaging over 10,000 steps a day. now for the weight loss only one pound last week so the scale says. i think its lying. lol. well keep on posting and keep the faith your pal Peabob. so i am at 292 now.

Hello Peabob, just joined the forum today and read the four pages of your saga. Glad you are winning the battle of the bulge, I too am obese - been a while since I got weighed, don't own scales that go up that high (in our small town I have to go the shipping scales in the basement of the hospital - but they said those scales are not accurate with only 300 lbs, they are industrial and weigh in tons.) Several months ago I went to the city (three hours from here) and I tipped the scales at the diabetic clinic at 348 lb's. When I get down to 300 I'll be able to get my weight done locally. I am also Type II diabetic and insulin dependant.
I just bought a Catrike Villager recumbent tricycle. Only took it for a few blocks today, went out in the a.m. and again in the p.m. both times totally tuckered me out. I have so much stamina that I can almost climb three stairs. (not flights, just stairs). I tire very easily, and with this recumbent I just stop and lay back (glad I sprung for that expensive headrest).
I'll have to measure my progress in inches of girth I guess.
Thanks for sharing your struggle with the world on this forum.

Hi FKD, I dont speak for Peabob, just myself but I read you post and wanted to respond. I also have type II diabetes althought I'm not insulin dependent. It definitely is a challenge. You've made several good steps. 1. You've made the decision to keep moving. 2. You've selected a good machine to work with. 3. You've found Peabob's musings..You will likely not find a better source of inspiration.
Good luck and welcome. As with Peabob, I look forward to reading your comments.
Keep moving and ride safe.

Thanks for sharing your struggle, too, FKD, you're among friends here. A lot of the things you're going through are not unknown to our members. We all look forward to hearing about how it's going for you, so don't forget that login and password.
I'm not a doctor, but it sounds like you're off to a good start. Trikes are fun and at this stage, while you are still trying to form riding habits and establish some trends, it's important to have fun on yours. A journey of a thousand miles must begin with a single step, and if a few blocks per ride, a couple of times per day are your first step, that's fine: more steps will follow. Take it from us that the fun doesn't go away when they do.
Welcome!

Hello Friends and Neighbors, Peabob here, Well im back from Lost Wages. (Las Vegas) hahahah. Can anyone tell me what a dry heat is and how come it still feels to dam hot. It was 107 degrees there on Saturday and dam did it feel hot to me being dry or not LOL.. Did the tourist thing and walked the strip on Saturday. Not to much fun. Bumping my elbow on the throngs of people walking the strip in the 107 degree heat and burning up my tender butt lol... However between the dry heat and the buffets i did not do to bad last week. Tipped the old scale at 290 this morning. I must of did something right. Man all the food at the buffets was just way to tempting. But with all the walking we did and not overdoing the meal thing i still seemed to lose 2 more pounds. Yeah!!!!!!!!! I did not win a ton of money either dang it.. down around 200 dollars but now i can say been there done that and i aint going back any time soon.. However did see some sights like the Red Rock Canyon and Mt. Charleston area. wow the scenes are just fantastic and it is about 7600 feet above sea level and almost 20 to 30 degrees cooler and not a lot of people now i would go back to explore that region again.. so thats the report from vegas and the arm is healing slowly.
FDK thanks for the blog here. Always room for new people here and let me tell you about the people here on this post. They are just the bestest kind of folks you want to associate with. If you need support they are here, If you need advice someone has been through it and will offer some insight and if you need anything just ask.. someone will help. When you ride your trike dont think of it as work think of it as going out in nature and just relax and enjoy it. set a pace no matter how slow or how fast just enjoy the ride. As you progress your rides will get better in one of two ways. One it will get you moving. Two it will make you feel good about yourself. Weight loss is so consuming in your thoughts 24/7 sometimes you need to just say the hell with it and dont worry about it and just have fun at something you want to do and by golly gee you will see that weight loss will happen. Whether you lose 10 pounds or 1 pound anything is a plus. So just keep on moving more eating less and dont worry about the DIET. By the way thats a four letter word... lol I call it a life plan and dont ever want to DIET again.. Welcome to this forum FDK and dont be afraid to ask and let us know how your doing. We are all looking forward to hearing about your progress and we are here to support you.. all the best my new Friend... Peabob

Pea Bob,
Just think, you've lost 90 lbs so far. Next time you head out to Red Rock Canyon, that could be your vacation. Just leave Vegas in the desert. Let's say it's next year. You've lost 90 in 4 months, in another 12 you should loose probably another 50-90, possibley even more. You could make your vacation all about hiking, climbing and any other outdoor activity you couldn't do (for any length of time) before. I'm not trying to be an ass, but I know what it is like trying to squeeze a big guy into a kayak. Some of us just don't fit! You keep this up and things like that won't be an issue. (A funny side note: I got into a Chrysler Crossfire ONCE! I had to crawl out of the car. I found it quite amusing, but the sales people looked at me like I was an idiot. I popped down into the seat just fine. However, my legs were bigger than the distance from the bottom of the steering wheel to the seat. My weight managed to push them under the wheel on the way in. Without that weight to get me out..... I had to laugh my but off. )
I think the progress you are making is incredible. Keep up the great work.
Later,
Steve
