Don't forget that weight loss doesn't only depend on what you eat, Mike.  It is also important to keep track of how much exercise you get, whether you're feeling at the top of your game or not so hot, etc.

The good news is that you have a regular pattern that works for you, and when you're able to get into it, the scale goes in the right direction.  Congratulations on re-establishing the trend.

Hi all,
Lost another 2 pounds I have started triking again about 4 days a week.
I have noticed that I need to keep my mileage per ride around 10 to 15
miles. I can easily go more but then I get too hungry and want to over eat.
Anyone else have this problem?

weight loss,, simple...keep eating the same things you like..just eat 1/2 as much of it..keep excercising , riding does make you hungry ..eat some crackers or a granola bar and drink some water or have a beer.

Hi Everyone,

Just joined the forum after a few months of lurking - yeah, I'm one implusive woman! Hubby and I have Catrike Villagers and love 'em. No butt, back, shoulder, neck, or wrist pain - who knew?!

My job has me sitting at a computer, in a plane seat, or in meetings - and it's taken its toll on my overall health. My goal is to lose 75 lbs over the next 18 months. Gasp! That number looks insurmountable when I type it. But as the saying goes, the journey of a thousand miles starts with a single step. I would also like to be in MUCH better physical health. Diabetes runs in my family and so far, touch wood, I don't have that problem, but with my weight 255, it's only a matter of time   unless I move the carcass more and the lips less.

I'm a Canuk, so I'll probably record my progress in kms, but bear with me, eh? Plus, saying I rode 12 k sounds better than 5 m.  Nice to find the forum and some like-minded folks.

Hi retrogurl, welcome aboard. I wish you good fortune on the weight losing, I'm one of the horrible ones who hasn't changed from 65kg @ 1.76m for the past 30 years. give or take a kilo.

Miles, Kilometres, both make sense to me, though I think in kilogrammes for weight. Oh, by the way, 12km is better than 5 miles, by 2.5 miles.  Use the measure that makes sense to you, we'll figure it out.

Happy Canada Day! Thanks for the warm welcome and helpful advice. We celebrated our nation's birthday with a 6 mile (9.65 km) ride. It's a ride we usually take, paved secondary highway with a few hills to challenge us and lovely prairie skies that we finally get to see while triking.  Riding a trike is about the journey for me, not the bike. That is, there's time to look around and notice the landscape and not just the pavement passing under a bike's front wheel and the blood rushing to my head.

Got asked if I was worried that drivers wouldn't see me on a trike so low to the ground. My answer is that anyone who can't see a 255 lb middle-aged woman in a green bike helmet riding an orange trike should probably not be driving!

Off to watch the Canada Day fireworks! How can you tell the Canadian in a room full of people? Just keep bumping into people until someone apologizes.

Hello August here and yes its Peabob.  I do have to apologize for not being here.  Things seem to go nuts for me.  As most of you know my son was killed last November 23, 2009 by a drunk driver and I have had so much on my plate.  Being here was not one of them.  However it is August of 2010,  the trial was completed last week and the man got conviceted of 2nd degree murder and OWI Causing Death. (OPERATING WHILE INTOXICATED). His sentencing is the 25th of this month.  I have been dealing with several issues and me has not been one of them.  The good news is I have kept my weight pretty contstant and have lowered some of my Diabetic numbers.  However I am ready to restart again.  Hope to hear from you all and keep the rubber turning and burning.  As always your pal Peabob.

Welcome back, Pea, no apology needed.

I didn't know about your son.  What a terrible thing to endure, it's every parent's nightmare.  No words can take away pain like that or put things back as they should be, but remember that I, as well as your many friends in the Forum, stand with you in your sorrow.

It is nice to read that your up-and-down weight has not shot up during the dark time you have just come through, and it's great that you're getting ready to climb back in the saddle again.  I hope that riding is as therapeutic for you as it is for so many of us, myself included.

Please keep us posted as to how things go, as you have in the past.  Our numbers are a little down from previous years, but our concern is still right up there and I think you'll wind up in the middle of just as many good conversations as before.

Blessings,

Larry

Hi there everybody. I am not only new to the forum, but I am also new to recumbent bikes/trikes. I am still in the process of recovering from a motorcycle accident that I had on 7/2/10. Still have a splint on my left hand, bandaged up right knee, and a neck brace that I hope comes off tomorrow. After doing a lot of research online, and even though I was still bandaged up. On 8/3 I went down to Colorado Springs, CO (as I live in Denver) test rode, and purchased a TerraTrike Rover 8. I too am on the heavy side (330+ lbs, but down from 393 lbs.). My wife and I decided that since we both turned 55 this year that it was time to get off our backsides and work on our health (and possibly lose some weight). Both of us use to love bicycling, but since gaining so much weight I could not take those upright bikes anymore. The seats on them made me feel like I was riding with a pole shoved up my butt. So needless to say I quit bicyciling a few years ago. But since then I had seen a few people on recumbent bikes and thought that maybe with one of those I too could get back into bicycling again. So after the accident I decided that there was no better time than now to get started. So far I have only been able to talk my wife into letting me ride around our neighborhood, but I am hoping to get this neck brace off tomorrow. And if so, watch out. Actually I know that I will need to take it easy at first, but I can't wait. I already have goals set for riding in a few benefit rides next summer.

Sorry for being so long winded. I have been reading post on this forum for a couple of weeks and decide to register on this forum as it seems to have a great group of people.

Well here is a recovery update. Doc siad the the neck is healing fine and everything is straight. But I still have to wear the neck brace for another month. Man that sucks. But he is allowing me to go back to work next week, but only half days till I come back and see him. I know I should really be thankful that I made it through the accident without more serious injuries and that I am healing the way the doctor was hoping. But I sure wish the healing would hurry up. Anyway, enough about me and my issues. I have read every post on this thread and also a lot of the other threads and I feel like I already know a lot of people on here. Peabob it sure is great to see you back and posting again. I am glad to see and read everyone's post on here. Once I finally get healed up I am really looking forward to getiing out on some longer rides and hopefully losing a bunch of weight. I have already changed a lot with my diet. I was born and raised in the south (Texas) and was brought up on meat & potatoes. I have always been heavy, but not as heavy as in the last 20-30 years. In fact now that I look back at the years I remember when I graduated from H.S. I was 6'1" and weighed 185lbs. I got out of school in June 1973, got married to my wife in Sept. 1973. Within a year after getting married I weighed 280lbs. Yes, my wife is a great cook. But I cannot blame her for all the weight. Yes, I didn't make myself push away from the table. The biggest reason for my gigantic weight gain was I went to work for Pepsi Cola right out of H.S. and became addicted to soda pop. In fact there was a time about 15yrs. ago where I was on the average of about a case a day or more of CocoCola. You never saw me without a pop in my hand during the day and I would wipe out a 2 liter bottle every night by myself. I now have limited myself to usually only one 12oz. can per day. And a lot of water.

Anyway I should quit for now before I fill up an entire blog page. I am really hoping to get into a excersize routine soon before winter hits here in Colorado. Although when it does I already have it set up to go by my daughter's apt. a few times a week or more to work out with my daughter in their workout facility as they also have a recumbent excersize bike plus more. As long as I don't get kicked out of here for being so long winded I will really try to post often with my results as I hope everyone else does also. We can all use each others support.

Take care, and keep smiling.

Ed

Nice to see you participating with this post and with others, Ed.  I was impressed that you have read every post in this string -- that goes back a long way!

The way I put it together for myself is fairly simple:

1.  Take in more calories than I burn up = weight gain.

2.  Burn up more calories than I take in = weight loss.

3.  If I like to eat a lot, then I'd better like to exercise a lot.

As it turns out, I don't like all forms of exercise, and some forms don't like me.  I love to jog, for example, but I'm leery of damaging a pair of knees that has gotten me through quite a few decades of hard use.

That's where triking comes in: I like it, and it likes me.  Therefore, if I do enough of it within a given eating period, I will either maintain my weight or take some off.  30 miles on moderately hilly road at about 90 F, for example, is worth about 1500 calories at my weight.

Well, enough on me.  I just wanted to welcome you aboard, and I have.  I look forward to your continued contributions.

Thanks for the reply and the welcome. And yes I have read every post on this thread. In fact I was just kind of wondering if Peabob was doing ok. I hope everything is well. And with everything that has been happening to him I just hope that he doesn't get discouraged and just give up and quits. I hope that we hear from him again soon. I was able to sneak out on my trike for a little while again before the rainstorm hit. The ride was fantastic. I have to get in as much riding as I can here in Colorado before the s**w starts flying.

Take care,
